Who makes good boots? I had a pair of Matterhorns a long time ago and liked them but are there better ones out there for all around stomping around in the woods etc? Are Danners that much better? Im looking a the fort lewis types but other ideas and reasons will be much appreciated. Im getting back into taking "long walks in the woods with lots of gear". Thanks

I also have a pair of LLbean boots but not sure how well they will hold up.

I have been issued both the Matterhorns and the Danners. I like the Matterhorns better. After long trips on my feet the Danners make my shins sore. I have walked in water up to an inch below the top of my Matterhorns in 30 degree weather and they were great, I didn't get any water in until it went over the top of the boot. The question is, is what type of weather and traveling will you be doing in them? I also love my Hitek Magnums in the summer, Fall and Spring. They are like wearing tennis shoes but don't repel water.

I just got a pair of the current USAF boot from Bellville and I like them so far. They seem pretty solid, are fairly sturdy, are Gore-Tex lined and cost about $108 shipped (I ordered through the military page on their site). Here is the link:

Check them out and yell if you have any questions.

I wear Matterhorns daily, and absolutely LOVE them. Pricey, though, especially for Safety Toes.

I have these. They are expensive, but worth the price and more to me.

My absolute favorite is the Rock Bear Claw. I've tried a variety of boots over the years and this is the one I'm sticking with. Its a very comfortable boot and is quite durable and has a great tread pattern. Not all Rocky boots are built the same though. I bought a pair of their tactical boots from Sportsmans Guide and hate them. They are too stiff and bite my ankles. I'm trying to break them in, but its a painful process. From now on, its only the Bear Claw for me.

I have a ppair of danners that i bought in 1997 that are still in really good shape. They're tough, confortable and warm. I had a pair of vasques that I tore up after only about 2 years. My danners have taken lots of abuse in several different countries and all over this one and they are still ready for some more tough trail duty.

I like Chippewa's. Used em for years in the woods of Oregon.
Good prices at
www.bootsusa.com
Have hunted in Cabela's boots also and have been quite pleased with them.
Good luck. Comfortable feet takes a great deal of the sting out of life.

I had real good luck with a pair of these also. Bought them back in, oh, about 1990, I think. A long time ago anyway. I finally wore them out last year. They couldn't go anymore. Soles wore out. If I could have had them resoled I would have, they were that comfortable. I'm no expert on boots by any means, but they were some damn comfortable boots. I hiked all over the place in them, and never got sore feet.

I replaced them with a pair of Danner Frontier 8" GTX's last week. They feel real comfortable too. They didn't have much in the way of arch support so I bought the Danner Airthotic insoles for them. Good to go now! they feel great.

I'll report back on how they did in about a week.

Are those steel toe boots? Are they cool enough to wear in the summer?

I have a pair of Danners that are right on seven years old...thety have done many miles in several countries and have yet to cause me any grief. My only complaint is that in summer here they get a bit warm. I do appreciate that in winter though. Everything is a compromise of sorts I guess.

I like Danners because they come in a big range of sizes, not much else fits my 4E wide duck finned feet. My mom likes them because they also come in A width.

You all may scoff at them but Ive had good luck with these $60 Cabelas boots (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod-wrapped.jhtml?id=0005293&navAction=push&navCount=1&indexId=cat550012&parentId=cat550012&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fpod-link.jhtml_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20564).

I wore a pair of these Cabelas to field camp in NM and utterly beat the crap out them crawling over all kind of rocks and stuff. My buddy had high priced hiking boots and he had the most hidous blisters almost from day one. I never had a single one in 6 weeks of walking all over some pretty nasty rocks with cheap Rawlings socks from Sams club. The sole seperated on my second pair after a year or two but their hard to beat for the money.

I wear Redwings almost daily for work and wouldnt trade them for anything in the world.

I ordered Danner Acadia boots, great quality boot, nice finish but they just were not wide enough for me. I got Matterhorns, same price (around 200 bucks) and basically same boot, so far they have worked for me.

Bwana John- I'm 10 EEE width and I purchased the danners in the only wide size they have listed "EE" on their website, I would love to own a pair of Danners what am i missing?

I just got back from hiking a whole bunch of canyons in Wyoming with my Danners and I'm pleased with them. Darn comfortable boots.
