I totally agree that you get what you pay for.
Over the years I have had a number of vests. I am really happy with the Molle rigs put out by a number of people.
Here are my observations on diff brands of vests:
Eagle Industries - USA made, superb quality. Stand behind their products. Down side is that availability of Molle gear from Eagle is extremely limited. Eagle is at full capacity and cannot keep up. The good news is they are moving to a larger facility soon. I have an Mp-5 vest that has served me very well. Comfy and tough nylon used.
Tactical Tailor - Made in USA. I have the Modular Assault Vest (MAV 2 piece). This one is set up for my FAL / M1A. Nylon is some, flexible, comfortable. There are some areas I would improve. THe nylon straps do not have the ends folded over and sewn to prevent them from pulling through the adjustment buckles. Also the web guide on the rear that guides the shoulder straps is flimsy. Due to the softness of the nylon, the straps get twisted in the rear guide. ARGH! The pouches use plastic MALICE clips which are great. This set up is comfy, and holding up well....but still would like to see improvements.
Blackhawk DOAV - Made in Viet Nam. Mine is set up for AK's. I have never been happy with the Made in Vietnam saga for Blackhawk. Wish they would make their gear here. The vest is rock solid...sewing quality seems good. Stiff material. Rubs around my neck a bit more than I like. Pouches are nice...on the AK pouches the length of the straps is Not enough to effectively thread the straps completely on the vest...the bottom couple of rows need to be left unmated to the Molle vest in order to snap. Major brain fart here on Blackhawk. I have seen the M4 and M-14 pouches...rock solid...and mate perfectly to the Molle vests. I know in the past I have been down on Blackhawk....but one thing they have going for them....you can get their gear fast...and it is guaranteed. If I could get Eagle I would.....but can't....so Blackhawk is a substitute. Overall I am quite happy with the vest and set up.
Practical Tactical - Made in USA. I love their Mesa vest. ROCK SOLID. BULLET PROOF. I am waiting for mine to arrive....been on order for a while. A buddy of mine has one....best vest out there in my humble opinion as of right now.
What other brands does everyone like and why?

My experience also.
Very rarely have I ever been burned by this credo and overpaid for inferior quality.
