What went into the G1 buttstock trapdoor? Oiler? Pullthrough? Broken shell extractor?

Swizzle sticks for happy hour?

Seriously, I think it was the cleaning kit.

A small slip of folded paper upon which is written all the smartass answers the soldier gets when he asks a question. So far, I have two. ;) Come on, nobody knows???

Yeah, I'd like to know too. I mean, it's certainly for cleaning gear, doh!, but details would be appreciated. It would be an interesting bit of kit to recreate.

I know a lot of guys have found notes written in Turkish that when translated are usually the soldier's personal info such as dates of service, home town and things like that. A few were love notes.

Based on that, your idea of "A small slip of folded paper upon which is written all the smartass answers the soldier gets when he asks a question" isn't too far off track.

all i found in mine was MUD. it was packed to the rim with turkish(i guess) soil. i mean the entire trapdoor space and all the way up the recoil tube. i dont know how it got there but it must have been at least a pound!

i shoulda taken a picture.....

You can bet it wasn't German mud - I think the Bundeswehr frowned on that sort of carelessness. I got one of the very early kits from DSA which was pristine - the entire front end looked new, every thing else darn close, although it did have a plastic PG and type C butt with the Belgian Army cartouche. Without the valuable and collectible mud, however:wink:

A logical assumption would be the contents of a cleaning kit, here's a pic of an early german one and a BGS soldier using it...

I'll wager a broken shell extractor. What else would be so handy and useful to a soldier in the heat of battle to have it so easy to get too and use in a combat situation? Makes perfect sense to me. The buttstock hole is way too small for a cleaning kit, unless its a pullthrough or a Garand-style cleaning kit.

I'd love to find one of those kits for my G1. However, the whole thing fits into the tin box, but it ain't going in the trap. Infact, I do have one of those oilers, and it is too large in diameter to fit either my G1 or my Belgian typeC butt. Personally,I guess you could get the pull thru, the brushes, and one of those little US GI grease pots in there with a little room to spare, but I still wonder what was issue? I'd still carry a sectional rod in my ruck to clear the bore if necessary, and a BSE.

The only cleaning kit items that were suppose to be fitted into the Butt of for the FAL / L1A1 / C1A1 type rifles were:-

Pullthrough and

Oil Bottle.

Early rifles had the hole in the butt as standard for these two items. As the years went by the hole in the butt trap was done away with hence the trap-less butt-plates.

The German's didn't use the Butt to store any of the cleaning kit items as the cleaning kit was self contained in the 'tobacco tin' type kits like Falcon has posted pics of.

Here's what the Pullthrough and oil bottle look like inside an Australian L1A1 rifle.

I think you're suppose to fill it with cosmoline. Every G1 stock I've seen has em.

Mine had about 8 scraps of a torn up rag packed in really tight, completely saturated with cosmoline.

There was a bunch of white gooey stuff in some that I disinfected.

I dunno.

There's a splinter he's gonna have to remove on his own.

After that, the Obersturmbannführer ordered all butts to be protected by latex.

You can hide your weed in there man.

probably supposed to be a pull through type cleaning kit since they didn't have the ones that went in the PG.
