simple question is what small/medium pack fits with the old style GI LBE harness (yes, the old pistol belt, H harness w/butt pack etc - I know, much better vests etc exist - but this is what I have now and know how to use from way back). So by "fit" I mean doesn't ride on the butt pack. I have a traditional medium alice w/frame that works if you lower the butt pack. Or works well with butt pack removed. So what works with the butt pack? (maybe something the size of tactical tailors 3 day assault pack?)

There's nothing wrong with using a medium ALICE pack if you empty your buttpack. It'll just ride on top of it (even cushions it). If you want to drop your ruck, then put what you need into the buttpack.

[old fart]Good old H harness! Don't know why they had to "improve" it. [/old fart]

This is a question I am interested in as well.
I am building up a set gear for national emergency.
I need a pack that fits above the butt pack which will have its own set of gear.

So what packs will fit this setup?

I am going to get a MOLE Patrol pack for that use 14"-15"-3"+
additional large pockets i think it will fit above the buttpack
nicely.
I'm going to mounting mine to a Dutch Vest above the buttpack.

The mililary made a pack adapter that allowed you to mount another butt pack on the H-harness. It used the pack attachment pad and two straps that went over the shoulder and under the small cross straps and they folded back and snapped. I don't have any now but they were cheap. CW

Used to see these all the time, bought one, sold it, bought another that is one piece, but doesn't work as good as the 2 piece. South African canvas back packs work well with the USGI buttpack. I think the medium ALICE will work with the butt pack sans the frame and maybe if you use the little take up rings/para cord loops inside the pack to reduce it's size a bit.

The patrol pack from my CFP-90 works great.

I found a South African pattern 70 combat pack that works very well.
The rest of the set is getting hard to find but is very well made.

All the best

I have an exellent condition large ALICE pack that's been fully worked over by Tactical Tailor for sale. mparrish has first dibs on it since I got it from him originally. If he doesn't want it back then it'll be available. Perfect pack to intigrate with the LBE your talking about. I'm selling off all my pack, chest rig and PLCE to finance a new Kifaru rig.
